Aoun - Help

So Aoun should stop using those double standards.

He cannot on the one hand, keep on repeating that the Christians are not well represented (which is actually true) creating more sectarian tension while on the other hand, he is trying to look secular by pleasing Nasralla (especially since the presidential elections are getting closer).

And it is not because a Christian leader cannot get along with Nasralla. But simply because Hezbollah is not "Lebanese". I mean, we should listen to his speech. He thanked el Assad and Ahmadinajad for their support. Thank el Assad? for what? 30 years of assassinations of politicians, kidnapping and torture of political activists?30 years of occupation? (to say the least).

Aoun had balls when everyone had none (now he only has waffles). He launched the liberation war in 1990 against the Syrian occupiers. And now what? He aligns himself with people like Karami and Wahab?
What a major disappointment. Not just for him, as a person, but for the young people around him, those who fought and resisted for 15 years. I don't know how people like Ne3metalla Abi Nasr and Farid el Khazen still stick to him.

It is very ironic that Geagea, a strong believer and fighter for federalism in the late 80's makes more sense than Aoun nowadays. Maybe those 15 years in prison did give him the opportunity to reflect on the civil war.

read this my friend, with your usual open mindedness. dear paul, politics is not a game for the "good"people, and it's essence is "alliances". whether hizbelshitan-iran and seems like now the international left, with aoun on the inside, or the other side with their own alliances..as long as we haven't talked together about where we want to take Lebanon(after defining it) or what to make of Lebanon, we will keep seeing the other as wrong, because they're not us. if this doesn't make too much sense, let me know :)

pd, first of all i wish you were still in IC. second, i really appreciate your feedback.
well it makes a lot of sense. But i thought we already defined our country. Or let me put it this way,we defined what our country is not. And it is not affiliated to Syria or Iran. This should be a priori to everyone now. no? I do understand that maybe people in the South do not all feel this way, but lebanon is a democracy after all and the Sunni's, druze and Christians all together are close to double the chiites (less than weapons, of course).
I always liked how you look at things, from a different angle.
Coming to the second point in Joseph Smeha's article, he raised a couple of other good points as far as christian representation in the government is concerned (whether is it Aoun or Geagea, someone should fucken step up and assume some responsibilites). Moreover, quoting him, he was saying that the ideology of resistance was born with lebanese forces in the late 70's and early 80's.
People should be aware of that. I remember saying that so many times before, but people would look at me as some kind of freak. Maybe this is starting to sink in now. Smeha was also saying that some people (such as Joumblat's bloc) are starting to accept this fact now, no? what do you think?

unfortunately defining what we are not is way different from having a minimum common goal to unify all of us. example, if u know what kind of person u do not want to be with, that does not mean that u have found the one to be with:)you would still be alone
i personally think Geagea is forced to take a bigger role than he really is, which is not politically sound.but not important point.
in face of hizballah/iran flags, you see the qouwetiyin carrying US flags, and my and probably ur idea of lebanon cannot live with either flags on lebanese grounds.there u go, politics and alliances...I think integrating everyone in a real political system after a 7iwar similar to what tayyar with hezballa did but more effective, and more leveled, and THEN (not a priori) defining the real size of each group(hopefully not religious by that time, but political) is our(or my, since as of now there is no our) only hope. can u see how very very unlikely it is:(and those of us who have packed their bags several years ago might have had the good sense to do so..i still act in denial, a presumably informed consent of the difficulty but necessity of trying..it's so difficult not to belong anywhere anmore my friend!

pd, as always, thanks for replying (and I say that because I really appreciate your opinion:).
It is true that knowing what we dont want is in no way close to what is ideal, which is what we actually want. But at least, to start with, we should agree that we dont want, and cannot tolerate Syria and Iran interfering in our politics. And yes, as you said, this is far from reaching our common definition of lebanon, which we have been working on for years and years. but let's do one step at a time. and yes, all flags should be banned, whether it is american, syrian or iranian. And we should sit on the same table again, and try to work out our differences, because this is the only way to reach a solution. But now, except for hizballa, a lot of people are pretty much on the same page, right?I mean, ignore Aoun who lost all credibility or popular support, the others are thinking along the same line of building a secular political system. And maybe Nasralla will never agree, maybe he will keep on shouting, that is fine as well. This is politics, you win and you lose. But he cannot keep his weapons and monopolize decisions for the whole country.
as for geagea, I agree, he is being pushed into the front scene by march 14 people. and it is true, that they want him to stand in face of Aoun. The thing is, they should not play with fire. Let's not underestimate this guy. He was the leader of the lebanese forces for few years, when they were probably at their best. If he gets momentum, he would be difficult to control. March 14 should keep that in mind. Let's not underestimate his potential.with what he is saying nowadays, and as I much as I used to dislike him in the past, he is making sense to me now.
